The Spiritual Power of the PLUG: A Source for True Connection

As you begin reading this text, some of you may be unfamiliar with the term “PLUG” which can carry an explicit connotation related to someone who is the source for providing “off-market” substances unavailable publicly or legally. (Use context clues) However, I submit to you today the further context of the definition of “PLUG”:

PLUG – a person who has the ability to get or supply hard-to-find items, that someone might desperately need or want.

With the term PLUG used in this manner, I am writing to the person who may need encouragement in their quest to desperately find things that may seem hard to secure in this season like peace, purpose, understanding, hope, or vision. If that’s you, Sis (or Brother), I found The PLUG—the charge for our ultimate spiritual power.

Looking for the PLUG

Whether literal or figurative, storms bring with them pressure and stress. Connecting to the right source is essential to recovery.

As I mentioned in a previous blog, when Hurricane Helene made her abrupt appearance in late September, our community lost all the essentials: power, internet, phone service—everything that makes a home or modern-day life feel comfortable. You never realize how much you rely on conveniences until they’re unavailable.

Well, who ever imagines themselves dependent on a generator? Certainly not me. Nevertheless, here I was day after day . . . refilling the gas, priming it up, pulling the crank. Of course, my husband handled this most days, but I was a strong co-captain in his absence; doing whatever was feasible to keep my family connected to needed necessities.

Amid recovery efforts, many lessons were learned, but the most meaningful came from a fresh perspective inspired by my family’s generator. Yes, I discovered that, like a generator, God is The PLUG, our essential source. He is the ultimate connection that sustains us, no matter how long the storm lasts.

Generator

Finding Spiritual Power in the Storm: Discovering the PLUG for Revival

To say the storm devastated our community is an understatement. Fortunately, because of our previous experiences with power outages, my husband purchased a generator. I had forgotten we even had it until Leon pulled it out of the shed. Thankfully, our access to a generator allowed us to connect both our refrigerator and freezer and avoid the risk of losing our food. And though the internet was unstable, the generator also provided a source to power our devices. But in a somewhat peculiar way, the generator helped me better understand the concept of “The PLUG ” needed for my spiritual charging.

Recognizing God’s Provision: Discovering The PLUG in Simple Moments

Though my family was able to maintain a little normalcy, so many others had no means to communicate and had to rely on community outreach for food and water. As most of us scrambled miles away to find gas, I would occasionally overhear people expressing frustration, wanting the “powers-that-be” to hurry up and restore life as we knew it. Predictions were provided that power might not return for weeks and clean-up efforts could take months.

Isn’t it interesting how, even when our resources are limited and our control is minimal, we still feel entitled or justified to have normalcy at our fingertips? Instead of appreciating the moment of pause, we want to grasp for the familiar—even if on most of our “normal days” we crave rest and relief from the routines that overwhelm us.

In my moments of observing our generator faithfully provide what we needed, God began whispering to me,

“Just like this generator, I’m YOUR source through every storm. When you’re plugged into ME, I’ll make sure you have exactly what you need.”

Suddenly, I realized . . . the desire to feel reconnected wasn’t about restroing normalcy or regaining control; it was about freeing myself of burdens not meant for me to carry and embracing the calm assurance that comes from trusting in God’s provisions. In the storms of life, discovering “The PLUG ” empowers us spiritually and brings sustainable peace.

Embracing What I Couldn’t Control

After hearing God clearly, each day I rose with the sun, cranked the generator (if Leon hadn’t done it before he left home), and submitted to preparing meals on the grill. Oh, trust me . . . we went without many things, but food was not one of them—LOL! Outside, on the grill, I was able to cook and heat water for washing dishes or to take “wash-offs “(if you know you know). When the sun went down, we retreated to bed with the windows open and all the neighborhood generators echoing in the wind. No matter my thoughts or desires, I surrendered to my circumstances and chose not to complain; but rather, to accept what God allowed.

Each day and night I thanked God for his protection and sustainment, despite the devastation around me. And can I be honest? On the day our power returned . . . I was a bit sad. I realized the forced stillness had actually brought an unexpected gift: a deeper connection to God’s peace. My concern was that the reconnections to the familiar might bring an influx of past or new distractions. I’m learning that sometimes, what feels like unfamiliarity becomes the needed backdrop for our greatest moments of clarity.

Before the Storm: God’s Call to Rest and Reset

Prior to the storm, God was already working on me about the importance of rest. However, if you know me, you know that “rest” is not exactly my default setting. I’m usually the one with the full calendar, every day strategically planned with author events and ministry gatherings. But this year, many of the outside events I scheduled fell through. It felt like I was pushing against a door God had intentionally locked.

Though I talked a good game and claimed to understand God’s instructions when he began redirecting me at the beginning of the year, I would be lying if I said I managed it well internally. This new season was entirely outside of my control. God was consistently shifting my focus toward self-care, family, and establishing clear, healthy boundaries.

It was apparent very early on that God’s plans for me would cause this season to both feel and look different. Instead of my usual summer tours, I spent time traveling and connecting with loved ones. From the end of May to the end of September, God used my experiences to show me that even unexpected rest can be restorative. It was proof that He knows exactly what we need, even when we don’t understand His plan. Surprisingly, I found comfort and assurance in those days, even as I longed for the “more productive me” to return.

Preparing to Stay Plugged In

In the forced stillness of the storm, I found both peace and clarity. God revealed to me that even when life feels unfamiliar, He is our unshakable source of spiritual renewal and strength. The generator, then, became a tangible reminder of the vital need to stay connected to God’s supernatural power—a power that provides sustainment and stability far beyond what other sources could ever offer.

As the holiday season approaches, it’s a perfect time to reflect on how we power ourselves spiritually. Are you seeking God’s presence in the busyness of life, or are you running on empty? The holidays and new year offer an opportunity to realign with God’s promises, unplug from distractions, and prioritize true connection with the Source who never fails.

But finding The Plug is just the beginning. In next week’s Part 2, I’ll share additional lessons God taught me about staying connected to Him daily, including a simple strategy you can apply to every season of your life. Stay tuned—you won’t want to miss it!

Here to bring a little sunshine!
