Here recently, I had the opportunity to have a conversation with some educators, parents, and students from Texas, Louisiana, Georgia, South Carolina, and Tennessee. It was interesting to hear the similarities not only in measures taken (or not taken) to prepare and protect students and teachers for returning to school (both in-person and on-line); but it was also surprising and profound to learn just how much mental health is being affected, particularly in the teachers expected to give the instruction.
We could choose to ignore feelings of sorrow, heaviness and grief, but eventually it will all build up and catch us off guard. We’ll wonder, “Why am I so irritated, angry, sad, or withdrawn.” It may be due to grief or our inability to properly deal with it. And 2020 has brought its share of it…grief that is.
Life. Whew! It comes…and it goes. And whether we called ourselves being prepared because someone was sick; OR, if someone dies tragically, unexpectedly, or prematurely…grief is grief…and it is no respect of person. The thing is…we never know how we are going to feel when we lose someone. Whether it’s someone we know or someone we heard about.
Saturday was August 15th to be exact. So then, why while school shopping…did I walk through the front doors of a home store to be met by rows of Christmas trees??? White ones. Frocked ones with the fake snow, and lights. Why? Have I already mentioned that it’s still August?
With the holidays approaching I know that many of us are a bit anxious to decide what we’re going to do to still give ourselves a sense of normalcy while at the same time maintaining safe social distancing practices. This task will be more than a notion, but it can be done.
