Heeeyy Dandelion! – ISBN: 979-8-9860452-2-1
HEEEYY DANDELION was birthed from a blog entitled, “Bloom Where You Grow, Dandelion!” It presented the benefits and characteristics of a dandelion to the likeness of a person who is strong and resilient.
About the Story
The children’s book, Heeeyy Dandelion, came after a hard conversation with the author’s daughter who struggled with insecurities and self-esteem. She often doubted being good enough in her talents, grades, behaviors, and even in her place in her family. One day she had convinced herself that it would be better if she left because in her mind, she wasn’t capable of being good. Her mother told her the story of the dandelion to help her understand that even though she may not always be understood, she still had value and purpose; and that running or abandoning issues don’t make them go away.
Ana (the young girl in the story) and her mother represent the author and her daughter. Together to go through the life-cycle of the dandelion, so that young Ana can recognize her beauty within. Through this process, she is reassured of the value she adds to her family.
In addition to self-esteem, Heeeyy Dandelion also tackles the subject of adoption and family belonging.
From the Author
The author says, “I don’t expect children to know or grasp the gravity of adoption, because it is an ever evolving matter that even those directly related to it need time and maturity to fully comprehend. However, I hope HEEEYY DANDELION! introduces readers to the reality that adoption is a normal experience for some children and families and should be regarded with sensitivity. Hopefully, parents will be able to open dialogue with their young reader to make them aware of what adoption is, and encourage them to show kindness and compassion towards friends, family members, or classmates who they may learn are adopted. Likewise, I also hope HEEEYY DANDELION! helps children who’ve been adopted understand there is no reason to feel ashamed of being adopted and I hope that it will help them recognize that they add their unique value to the family who chose them.
Finally, I hope that, through this book, other children who are dealing with self-esteem or understanding their worth and value will be encouraged. Likewise, I also hope this book can also be a support to parents who are doing the best they can to raise those children in a safe, loving environment; whether biological or not.”
